The Caring Christian Church

In 1976, Rev. Kenneth Ferguson became the proud owner of a two family-home. Heeding the call of God on his life for his own ministry, Rev. Ferguson began conducting church services in the basement of his family home.  The church soon found the need to relocate after city officials responded to complaints of congregants gathering in the basement for worship services. The search began in earnest for a more accommodating location. To this end, a new location was found at 211th Street and White Plains Road and christened as “The Upper Room”. The burgeoning congregation was on the move again and subsequent locations on Bronxwood Avenue became the church’s home. First it was 3959 in the summer of 1983, followed by 3821 Bronxwood Ave, four blocks south at 220th Street in August 1983. The church was then renamed Church of God of Bronxwood Ave.

In 1989, Rev Ferguson ended his leg of the race in New York, answered the call of God to relocate with his family to Atlanta, Georgia, where he now pastors the Stone Mountain Church of God. In our earthly sojourn, almost all of us can attest to meeting others who have left indelible marks on our lives. For Bronxwood Church of God, one such person is our dear founder Rev. Kenneth Ferguson.

In August of 1989 Rev Ferguson selected the Late Rev. Dr. A.G. Quarrie to continue the work following his departure. With new vision and direction the church continued to flourish tremendously, allowing for two morning services. Dr. Quarrie saw that more space was needed to house the people and accommodate new developmental programs. And as the Lord would have it, Dr. Quarrie and his leadership team purchased a property at 3232 Lurting Avenue. This would become the new home of Bronxwood Church of God in the summer 1995. After the completion of the new sanctuary in 2000 it was dedicated and renamed Bronxwood International Church of God. This was a testament of the faithfulness of God to his people where Rev. Ferguson planted, Rev Quarrie watered and God gave increase.

Rev. Dr. Quarrie is a man whom God has equipped with visions and dreams for the church as seen in the many programs and plans that he has implemented for the progression of our church here at Bronxwood. His plans did not stop with just the dedication of the sanctuary but continued with the leveling of the parking lot.  He also purchased the Social Security building with the goal in mind of building a state-of-the-art youth center and home for seniors from the congregation. He not only built buildings but took pride in building up himself and others. Two notable instances were the birth of Wyandanch Church of God and the establishment of the Athanasius School of Ministry.

Rev Dr. Quarrie completed his ministerial assignment after making his transition to glory on July 26, 2019. He will forever be missed but his legacy of love and perseverance and the ways he touched all our lives will remain in our hearts.

Bronxwood International Transitional Period

Bronxwood experienced a devastating loss with the transition of our leader of over 30 years, who went home to be with the Lord in July 2019 after a short bout of illness. This was one of the most challenging periods in Bronxwood’s history.  From  July 2019 to September 2020, we pooled together as a church family as we grieved Dr. Quarrie’s loss while continuing the work of the ministry. The void created by Pastor Quarrie’s passing resulted in the church without a permanent leader for a little over a year. But thanks be to God, during that time, church stalwarts like NY State Bishop Steve Smith, Dr. Pauline Gayle from East Flatbush Church of God, and our very own Rev. Nelson Morrison and Rev. Pearl Foster along with the officers of Bronxwood held the reins as the church continued to function efficiently and effectively – without skipping a a beat. This proved true despite the unexpected devastating impact of a global pandemic due to COVID-19 and the subsequent quarantines and government mandate encouraging citizens to adhere to stay-at-home orders.

Then on October 3rd, 2020, after months of continuous prayer and seeking the face of the the Lord, Bronxwood was blessed with the appointment of our new Bishop, Dr. Hixford Allen, the third Bishop to officially lead Bronxwood International COG. We were elated and excited at the news of our new leader as he was no stranger to the church as he served as one of the educators at the church’s Athanasius School of Ministry since its inception and was a dear friend of our former pastor.  God is a purposeful and selecting this great man of God to take the baton for this next leg of the journey was clearly in line with his vision and mission for us all.

Ministry

The mission at the Bronxwood International Church of God has always been to emulate the life of Jesus Christ as a church body.  We have sought to provide service, teaching, and examples of Christ to the Bronxwood community to result in discipleship and transformation. We aspire to impact lives by spreading the goodness of God and the riches gained from living a life that mirrors the character of Christ.

Several ministries and teams were established  over the years to address the needs of the church  and the community such at the Care ministry, Under-shepherd ministry, etc.

Every ministry has been established with the sole purpose of addressing the holistic needs as well as helping to save souls.

From our humble beginnings to the present day, the Lord has added more than 1500 souls through baptism, while several others have placed membership. Future include retaining and restoring membership, and driving forward with the new vision and mission of our new shepherd Rev. Dr. Hixford N. Allen…
